Santa Claus is the one gift-bringer almost every American household means by the word. He is said to deliver presents late on Christmas Eve and through the night, with a sleigh, reindeer and a workshop of elves behind him, and children find what he left on the morning of the 25th. The name is a phonetic form of Sinterklaas, the Dutch figure settlers brought to New Amsterdam. The sleigh and flying reindeer were fixed in the public mind by the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", and the artist Thomas Nast gave him his modern look in Harper's Weekly in 1863.
When presents are opened
For most American families the day is Friday 25 December 2026. Santa is said to come in the night of Thursday 24 December, so the stockings and the pile under the tree are a surprise on waking. Some households keep one family gift for Christmas Eve, but the main opening is in the morning, and the figure children are told about arrives overnight, not in the evening.
The date is the same in every state because it follows the Christmas story, not a regional custom. What varies from home to home is the order of the day: stockings first or tree first, breakfast before or after, and who hands the presents round. Those are family rules, not national ones.
Where the American Santa comes from
The story starts with Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop of Myra known for giving in secret. Dutch settlers carried the Sinterklaas legend to New Amsterdam, and "Santa Claus" is an English-speaker's rendering of that name. In England the older figure Father Christmas, who began as a symbol of feasting rather than of children's presents, later merged with him, and the two are now treated as one.
The picture most Americans carry was built in the nineteenth century. The anonymous poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", better known as "The Night Before Christmas", appeared in 1823; Clement Clarke Moore later claimed it, though some scholars argue for Henry Livingston Jr. It gave Santa the sleigh and the flying reindeer. Thomas Nast's 1863 drawing in Harper's Weekly added the look, and the North Pole home may also be his invention.
Writing to Santa: USPS Operation Santa
The Postal Service opened the 114th year of Operation Santa on 14 September 2026. A child writes a letter, puts it in an envelope with a stamp and addresses it to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Rd., North Pole, 88888. The letter should carry the child's first and last name and a full return address. Letters are accepted from the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
The Postal Service's own release sets the deadline: the letter must be postmarked by Saturday 5 December 2026 to be eligible for adoption. Volunteers who want to answer letters or send gifts can register from Monday 2 November, and the adoption window opens on 16 November. Submitting a letter does not guarantee that someone adopts it, so a reply from home is a sound back-up.
Tracking Santa on Christmas Eve
Many American children follow Santa's flight on the evening of 24 December. NORAD Tracks Santa began in 1955, when a department-store advertisement printed a wrong telephone number and the calls reached a military air-defence centre; NORAD took it over when it was founded in 1958. The website is noradsanta.org and the telephone line is 1-877-446-6723.
NORAD has not announced its 2026 hours. In 2025, the programme's 70th year, live tracking ran on 24 December from 4 a.m. to midnight Mountain Time, with recorded updates by phone until 3 a.m. on the 25th. Expect a similar pattern this year, and look at the site on the day.

Booking a visit
- Santa Claus
- $200 – $300 · ~40 min
- December 24
The most professionalised version anywhere: background-checked, insured performers, some under national franchises, booked through dedicated Santa platforms rather than general party agencies. A timed home visit with gift handover, photos, a story or a game.
Per visit, not per hour, for thirty to forty-five minutes, with a non-refundable retainer of about $150 to hold the date. Hourly entertainer bookings run $150–300. A real beard costs more, and the first three December weekends plus Christmas Eve carry a premium.
The first three weekends of December and Christmas Eve go earliest and cost most. Real-bearded performers are the bottleneck.
Where to book
- HireSanta · Nationwide
The largest dispatcher in the country, and the one that appeared on Shark Tank. It books real-bearded performers for homes, company parties and whole mall seasons. A sensible first stop outside the metros listed below.
- Santa For Hire · Nationwide
Active since 1999, the older of the two national agencies. Real-bearded performers only, booked through a request form instead of a public calendar, so expect a call back, not an instant price.
- HireSanta — New York City · New York City
City page with its own roster. Manhattan apartment visits fill earlier than anywhere else in the country.
- HireSanta — Los Angeles · Los Angeles
Covers the LA basin. Drive time across the metro is charged, so ask what the fee includes before paying the retainer.
- HireSanta — Chicago · Chicago
Chicagoland roster. Ask specifically about weather cancellations.
- HireSanta — Dallas · Dallas–Fort Worth
The company's home metro and the deepest roster outside New York.
- HireSanta — Houston · Houston
Greater Houston, on the same booking terms as the national arm.
- HireSanta — Atlanta · Atlanta
Metro Atlanta roster.
- HireSanta — Miami · Miami–South Florida
South Florida. If you want a bilingual performer, ask; it is not listed by default.
- IBRBS (International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas) · By region
Not a booking service: it is the performers' own professional body and keeps no public directory. Its regional chapters are a route to an independent Santa in a city no agency covers, and membership is a credential you can ask a performer about.
